Rwanda driving licence on Irembo (official RNP steps)

Rwanda National Police driving licence services run on IremboGov (irembo.gov.rw): provisional theory test registration, e-provisional licence, definitive practical test registration, and definitive licence application. This guide follows Irembo’s published help articles. Dereva helps you study for the provisional theory test before you book on Irembo; it does not replace Irembo.

1. Prepare for the provisional theory test (before Irembo)

  1. The provisional driving test checks your knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and signals (RNP via Irembo). You may take it in Kinyarwanda, English, or French, as paper-based or computer-based, depending on what Irembo offers when you register.
  2. On Dereva, study the provisional (PDL) curriculum and practise with drills and timed mock exams in the same three languages.
  3. Irembo states the pass mark is 12 out of 20 at most centres, or 60% or above at the Busanza automated test centre. Use mocks on Dereva to reach that level before you pay for a slot.
  4. You need a Rwandan national ID, age 16 or above, and a phone number linked to your ID (dial *125# to check). Passports and national ID replacement certificates are not accepted to sit the provisional test. Confirm the full checklist on Irembo before you apply.

2. Register for the provisional driving test on Irembo

  1. Go to irembo.gov.rw. Under Police, open Registration for Driving Test.
  2. Choose Registration for driving test - provisional (paper based or computer based) and click Apply. You may apply with or without an Irembo account; provisional test registration is website-only (not USSD).
  3. Enter the applicant’s national ID number. Choose exam language and district.
  4. Pick an available slot (filter by date, time range, and test centre). Slots are limited; if your date is full, choose another. The registration fee is RWF 5,000; the billing number expires in 8 hours and unpaid slots are released.
  5. Enter a phone number linked to your national ID and/or email, confirm the details, and submit. Pay the bill (for example via Mobile Money).
  6. After payment you receive SMS/email with your approved test date and centre. Bring the ID documents Irembo and RNP require on exam day.

3. After the provisional test: licence, lessons, definitive test, full licence

  1. Check results on irembo.gov.rw: Police → Driving License Exam Results. Use your registration code or national ID (retrieve a lost code with *909#). If you passed, continue on Irembo.
  2. Apply for your e-Provisional Driving License: Police → Application for Driving License → Application for Provisional Driving License (website or *909#). Fee RWF 10,000; download after payment. Apply within 2 years of passing the theory test. Irembo notes the e-provisional is required for driving school practice, definitive test registration, and exam day.
  3. Take driving school / practical training (Dereva can help you book lessons with tutors or schools while you hold a valid provisional licence).
  4. Register for the definitive (practical) driving test: Police → Registration for Driving Test → Registration for Driving Test - Definitive. You need a valid provisional licence (lost or expired provisionals are not eligible), national ID, age 18+, and a slot. Standard registration is RWF 10,000 (Busanza and automatic B(AT) tests have other fees and sites; see Irembo). Billing expires in 8 hours.
  5. After passing the definitive test, apply for the definitive driving licence: Police → Application for Driving License → Application for Definitive Driving License. Fee RWF 50,000; processing about 14 days. You need your registration code, collection district, and pick-up station. RNP notifies you when the physical licence is ready at the Traffic Police office.

FAQ

How much does each Irembo driving licence step cost?

As published on IremboGov help: provisional test registration RWF 5,000; e-provisional licence application RWF 10,000; definitive test registration RWF 10,000 at most centres (Busanza and some categories differ); definitive licence application RWF 50,000. Always confirm live fees on irembo.gov.rw before you pay.

Does Dereva replace Irembo or RNP?

No. Dereva is for learning and practice (theory, mocks, booking driving lessons). Registration, payment, e-provisional download, test slots, and licence applications are only through IremboGov and RNP.

What pass mark does RNP use for the provisional theory test?

IremboGov states 12 marks or more out of 20 at most exam centres, or 60% or above at the Busanza automated test centre. Dereva mock exams are practice only; your official result comes from RNP via Irembo.

Can I change my provisional test date or switch paper-based to computer-based?

Irembo directs applicants to contact Rwanda National Police for rescheduling or exam-type changes: info@police.gov.rw, toll-free 118, or 0788 311 155. Double-check category, centre, and date before paying; Irembo warns that details cannot be edited after the bill is generated.

Where can I read the official instructions?

Use IremboGov support (support.irembo.gov.rw), for example articles on registering for the provisional test, e-provisional licence, definitive test registration, checking results, and applying for a definitive licence. For payment or code issues, contact support@irembo.com or Irembo toll-free 9099.

Fees, slots, eligibility rules, and required documents are set by RNP and IremboGov and can change. This page is a summary for learners using Dereva; always follow the current service pages on irembo.gov.rw and support.irembo.gov.rw.
